On average, agri-PV systems are more cost-intensive than conventional ground-mounted systems, with the additional costs depending on the system solution in question. Nevertheless, the increasing number of global Agri-PV projects shows that this innovative technology has the potential to make a significant contribution to sustainable development and the energy transition in the country.

Advantages of Agri-PV systems in agriculture

Significant additional income for farmers: By simultaneously utilising their land for agri-PV systems, farmers have the opportunity to generate additional, sometimes much higher income than with traditional agriculture. This diversification of income sources can help to make agriculture more financially stable in the long term and reduce dependence on conventional agricultural yields. In addition to the income from rent and harvesting, additional income can also be generated if the farmer takes care of the green areas and the cleaning and maintenance of the PV modules.

Avoidance of competition for space

Today, many countries have limited land reserves, which can lead to conflicts between agricultural use and the production of renewable energy (‘land competition’). Agri-PV systems offer an intelligent solution by utilising existing agricultural land efficiently instead of replacing it monocausally. The solar modules are therefore installed directly on land on which crops are also grown or livestock are kept.

Avoidance of crop failures

Especially for systems with elevated modules, the roofing of the areas offers protection for animals and plants. As a result, crop losses or yield reductions can be reduced or even completely avoided in the event of extreme weather events.

Water saving

The solar modules provide shade, which protects the soil surface from strong sunlight and reduces water evaporation. Agri-PV systems can also be designed to collect and store rainwater. This collected water can then be used to irrigate the plants, reducing dependence on external water sources.

Protection against soil erosion

Agri-PV systems act as a physical barrier that protects the soil from direct contact with rain and wind. This strengthens the soil structure and protects it from erosion.

Climate change and dry soils

The use of Agri-PV can prevent increasingly frequent crop failures caused by excessively dry soils, which are also a consequence of climate change.

Lucrative additional income for farmers

By dual-utilising their land with agrivoltaics, farmers can generate significantly higher income than with pure agriculture. In addition to harvesting and renting, there are other sources of income such as maintaining the green areas and cleaning and servicing the PV systems. This strengthens financial stability and reduces dependence on traditional yields.
